(c) The Intelligentsia and the Classes

The foregoing discussion might create a biased impression of the intelligentsia as a self-begotten and self-perpetuating group, for so far we have not considered its dependence on the larger society. This relationship is our present subject.

In a sense, intellectuals are renegades who have abandoned their parental stratum. This fact makes it imperative that we take stock of the circumstances of this detachment and the subsequent relationship of the apostate to his former class. New social opportunities accrue to an intelligentsia whenever a dominant stratum proves unable to discharge newly-emerging functions of leadership. These are the occasions for the selective rise of intermediate classes, and it was these situations in which the ministeriales advanced to prominence and elements of the middle classes moved into the scholarly professions.1
